grắunţ (grăúnţe), s.n. – 1. Bob. – 2. Sămînţă, boabă. – 3. Glob, bilă, obiect mic şi sferic. – var. grăunte, grăunţă. Mr. grăunţ, gărnuţ. lat. *granutium sau, după Densusianu, rom., XXXIII, 279, Candrea-Dens., 765, Pascu, I, 95 şi DAR, lat. *granuceum (Puşcariu 730 propunea forma lat. *granuculum, care ar fi dus la alt rezultat), cf. grîu. Fonetismul nu este clar. Cum rezultatul din lat. trebuia să fie în orice caz grănuţ, ca în mr., trebuie presupus că s-a adăugat un infix nazal (cf. Puşcariu, Diminutiv., 148), *grănunţ, cu disimilare ulterioară. Această explicaţie este valabilă şi dacă plecăm de la grîu, în forma sa primitivă grănu (ca în mr.), cu suf. dim. -uţ. – Der. grăunţar, s.n. (regulator la piatra morii de grîu); grăunţos, adj. (granulos); grăunţi, vb. (a granula; a face boabe); îngrăunţa, vb. (a rotunji; a da nutreţ animalelor), cuvînt rar.
