ciob (cióburi), s..n. – Fragment, hîrb, bucată dintr-un vas de lut, sticlă sau porţelan. tc. çob (Roesler 608; Şeineanu, II, 128). DAR respinge această der., bazîndu-se pe extinderea geografică a cuvîntului şi pe absenţa sa din dialecte. Cuvîntul apare şi în per.; ar putea proveni din cuman. ceea ce ar explica mai bine extinderea ariei sale. După Cihac, II, 135, din pol. csop. Der. cioabă, s.f. (pipă de lut; vas inutil); ciobăi (var. ciobi), vb. (a sparge, a face bucăţi).
