Mr. avgustru, megl. avgust. lat. pop. agŭstus, formă redusă de la augŭstus (Puşcariu 40; Candrea-Dens., 24; REW 786; DAR); cf. alb. gušt, it., sp., port. agosto, prov., cat. agost, fr. août. Coexistă în prezent cu dubletul neol. august, înainte pronunţat de asemenea avgust (‹ ngr. αὔγουστος). – Der. agustos, s.m. (varietate de struguri timpurii); gustar, s.m. (august), rezultat din contaminarea cu a gusta, etimologie populară care a interpretat numele lunii ca momentul cînd se gustă şi se încearcă roadele culesului, şi mai ales ale viei.
