BUCANIÉR s.m. Denumire dată coloniştilor francezi din America din sec. XVII care se ocupau cu vânătoarea de vite cornute sălbatice, a căror carne o vindeau. ♦ Pirat, aventurier. [pron. -ni-er. / < fr. boucanier, cf. boucan – loc unde se usca şi se săra carnea].
