SORB1, sorbi, s.m. Arbore din familia rozaceelor înalt până la 15 m, cu frunze ovale, flori albe şi fructe cărnoase, al cărui lemn se foloseşte la strungărie (Sorbus aria). – lat. sorbus.

SORB2, sorburi, s.n. 1. Vârtej de apă cu un ochi adânc la mijloc. ♦ Loc unde apa unui râu dispare de la suprafaţă, curgând în continuare printr-un curs subteran. 2. Vânt puternic care se propagă sub forma unui vârtej. 3. Piesă metalică perforată sau prevăzută cu sită care se montează la capătul introdus în lichid al conductei de aspiraţie a unei pompe pentru a împiedica pătrunderea în pompă a corpurilor străine, a impurităţilor; p. gener. ţeavă, conductă aspiratoare. – Din sorbi (derivat regresiv).
